be a volunteer in our refund Patrol!
Since 2007, our Recycling Patrol has been running a recycling station at Roskilde Festival. Here, we sort and count all kind of cans and bottles on a large scale as one of the festivals refund stations. We are a working team of 8 people from Southern Schleswig (the Danish minority in the north of Germany), who has worked almost year-round on gathering up to 150 volunteers at the world’s greatest festival. Our motto is “sorting refund, mixing languages” – we might very well be the most international team at the festival.
Apart from a core group of Southern Schleswig volunteers, we actively welcome volunteers from various minorities. Our refund station is a place where cultures meet, languages blend, and friendships are formed. Everyone is welcome—our focus is on community and festival spirit!
in the refund station, we don’t work – we share a social commitment
You can see it in the way we prefer to talk about having a good breakfast at a festival, rather than talking about the most effective way of working. Our focus lies on the social aspects. Everyone interested in contributing to that is welcome to join us.

FAQ
What is People?
People is the festival’s volunteer database. All volunteers must register here, and this is where you will be assigned to SdU’s refund station. Sign up here: https://people-vol.roskilde-festival.dk/bliv-frivillig/.
It’s through People that you’ll receive your wristband and can find your shift schedule. You can view your schedule in Heap360, which you can find a link to in People.
What is our task at the festival?
We are responsible for a refund station and a large-scale reverse vending machine, which can be compared to the bottle recycling machine you find at your local supermarket, but much larger. Festival guests bring their collected returnables to our station and have the value transferred. We receive the returnable containers, count them, and sort them. The festival ensures the containers are collected and recycled. You can get a deposit on cans, bottles, cardboard handles, shot glasses, pitchers, cups, etc.
How many hours will I work?
Roskilde Festival has a rule that all volunteers must work a total of 32 hours. We have chosen to use 8‑hour shifts, so everyone will work 4 shifts of 8 hours each.
What benefits do I get as a volunteer with SdU?
As a volunteer with SdU, we offer you a cozy brunch every morning in our volunteer tent, Valhalla. Valhalla is our common meeting place, which also has a small bar (with student-friendly prices). Additionally, we host a welcome party for all volunteers, which helps build our great community.
All volunteers will also receive 4 meal vouchers that can be used at the festival’s delicious food stalls!
How much music will I miss?
Typically, two of your shifts will be during the warm-up days, and two will be during the music days. At least one of your shifts will be at a time when music is playing, which means in the afternoon/evening period from Wednesday to Saturday.
Can I choose my shifts? Can I work with my friends?
We want to distribute the shifts as fairly as possible. Therefore, we will assign the shifts. It is not first come, first served, and we cannot guarantee that you will see all your favorite acts. Of course, we still try to do everything we can to accommodate you as much as possible. You will be able to submit your shift preferences in May/June. We will contact you when it’s time to choose your shifts.
How is the work divided?
Most volunteers will be working at the refund station, receiving, counting, and sorting the returnable containers into bags and boxes. There will also be about 4–5 volunteers who will be serving the reverse vending machine.
We have a small group of shift leaders, who are more experienced volunteers from previous years. They ensure that the work is divided fairly and that the check-in and check-out of goods is documented and signed. There are always at least two shift leaders on a shift.
Additionally, we have a group of 8 volunteers, known as the workgroup, who maintain contact with the festival’s organizers, communicate information to the volunteers, buy supplies for breakfast, create the shift schedule, and handle any loose ends during the festival.
I will be under 18 years old when the festival starts. Can I still volunteer with you?
Yes! However, we have a limit on the number of volunteers under 18 that we can take, and parents must give their consent for this. Therefore, you will automatically be placed on our waiting list. We will contact you to confirm your application or decline it if all the under-18 spots are filled.
Volunteers under 18 will not have shifts during the night.
You must be at least 16 years old to volunteer with us.
What skills should I have?
You don’t need any special know-how. We´ll train you as a group and we will make sure that you are well prepared for all the different tasks.
We make a great deal out of being social and fostering our community. Though, it’s just an invitation, not an obligation
I am not a Danish/EU citizen. Can I still volunteer with you?
We would love to have as many different cultures and languages as possible on our team. However, there are labor laws and festival-specific rules. As a general rule, you must be an EU citizen or otherwise have the right to work in Denmark.
Where is the refund station?
The refund station and machine are located in the East City area.
